Summary of Movie
MGM’s status as the “class” studio was fully engaged when production chief Irving Thalberg took on this expensive, serious adaptation of Pearl Buck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. A smooth entertainment with a stiff portion of this-is-good-for-you seriousness, The Good Earth epitomizes Thalberg’s idea of Art, which was also the prevailing idea of the period he dominated in Hollywood. The story follows Wang Lung (Paul Muni), a humble farmer, who makes an arranged marriage to a slave, O-Lan (Luise Rainer). The couple’s great struggle is to procure–and then, against withering odds, keep–a piece of land, ownership of which makes the difference between self-determination and near-slavery. The film’s physical production is truly eye-filling, with location shooting in China providing exterior shots and backdrops (and blending seamlessly with the footage shot in the U.S.). No wonder the great cinematographer Karl Freund won an Oscar for the photography, which includes an awesomely staged locust plague.
Also copping an Oscar was Luise Rainer for best actress–her second consecutive award, after The Great Ziegfeld. Rainer’s underplayed portrait of self-effacing stoicism is a contrast to Muni’s broader performance, although in some odd way he’s exactly right for his role. Caucasian actors play the main characters (Walter Connolly is the family’s bothersome, and tiresome, know-it-all uncle), with Asian actors–including Keye Luke–filling out the supporting parts. The blend of sobriety and hokum is vintage Thalberg, and this is the one MGM movie with an onscreen dedication to the young dynamo; he died during production, age 37. –Robert Horton

Don’t miss Trois/Trois 2: Pandora’s Box… WOW what an outstanding movie! Gregory W. Anderson and Ron N. Binder were great together! The great cast includes Gregory W. Anderson, Ron N. Binder, Donna Biscoe, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Gary Dourdan.
If you love watching Gregory W. Anderson or Ron N. Binder, you are definitely want to watch Trois/Trois 2: Pandora’s Box

Trois starts out like some late-night soft porn on cable, but ends up as a Fatal Attraction-style thriller with some surprising plot twists and an African American cast. An attractive young couple, Jermaine and Jasmine (Gary Dourdan and Kenya Moore), move to Atlanta, where their relationship starts to hit some sexual doldrums. Jermaine thinks a ménage à trois with another woman would spice things up; Jasmine is resistant until a friend convinces her the idea is not so outrageous. A coworker suggests a sexy bisexual cocktail waitress named Jade (Gretchen Palmer), whom Jermaine offers to pay to be a third party in their bed. Jade accepts, but only because she has a young son to support. The night is all Jermaine wanted it to be–but afterwards he finds himself threatened by the unexpected bond that forms between the two women. Soon he and Jade find themselves locked in a fierce battle, which escalates to the point that Jermaine finds a rattlesnake in his car–only is it really Jade who’s after his life? Trois isn’t tremendously subtle, but it doesn’t dumb down the complexities of sexual conflict between husband and wife. The cast is extremely good-looking and committed to the action. The sex manages to be explicit–the movie isn’t coy about what’s happening–but discreet at the same time. An unpredictable, independently made thriller.
The sequel improves on the original. Mia (Monica Calhoun) is a police psychologist who leaves the force to start a private practice, but one of her cases follows her. Mia, whose husband neglects her, finds herself drawn into stories of sexual escapades by Tammy (Chrystale Wilson), whose husband was brutally murdered only months before. To gain a better understanding of her patient, Mia goes to a mysterious sex club called Pandora’s Box, not realizing she’s being drawn into a trap. The sex club scenes in Trois 2: Pandora’s Box are no sillier (and considerably more direct) than those in highbrow erotic thrillers like Eyes Wide Shut. Calhoun (The Best Man) makes an appealing heroine and carries the movie along in between the steamy scenes. Also featuring Michael Jai White and Tyson Beckford. –Bret Fetzer

High Noon is a great movie! The cast includes
Gary Cooper, Thomas Mitchell, Lloyd Bridges, Katy Jurado, Grace Kelly.
If you love watching Gary Cooper or Thomas Mitchell, you are definitely want to watch High Noon

Summary of Movie
One of the greatest Westerns ever made gets the deluxe treatment on this superior disc from Republic Home Video’s Silver Screen Classics line of special-edition DVDs. Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the ’50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he’ll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman’s drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anticommunist campaign. Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first “adult” Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. Additional features include the exclusive documentary The Making of High Noon, hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin and featuring interviews with the late Lloyd Bridges (who played Cooper’s rival ex-deputy), director Fred Zinnemann, and producer Stanley Kramer. Also included is the original theatrical trailer and a special chapter stop highlighting the Oscar-winning song “Do Not Forsake Me.” Offered in English and dubbed French and Spanish, with English closed-captioning or Spanish and French subtitles. –Jeff Shannon

This masterpiece by Preston Sturges is perhaps the finest movie-about-a-movie ever made. Hollywood director Joel McCrea, tired of churning out lightweight comedies, decides to make O Brother, Where Art Thou-a serious, socially responsible film about human suffering. After his producers point out that he knows nothing of hardship, he hits the road as a hobo. He finds the lovely Veronica Lake-and more trouble than he ever dreamed of.

Breakin’ All the Rules is a great movie! The cast includes
Jamie Foxx, Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut, Peter MacNicol, Jennifer Esposito.
If you love watching Jamie Foxx or Gabrielle Union, you are definitely want to watch Breakin’ All the Rules

Summary of Movie
Jamie Foxx proves a winning romantic lead in the surprisingly subtle Breakin’ All the Rules. When Quincy (Foxx, Ali, Collateral) gets brutally dumped by his fiancee, he researches the psychology of firing employees to create a break-up guide–a guide to a kinder, gentler break-up. His cousin Evan (Morris Chestnut, The Brothers) is afraid that his girlfriend is going to dump him, so he asks for Quincy’s help, setting in motion a web of mistaken identities that snares Evan’s girlfriend Nicky (Gabrielle Union, Bring It On), Quincy’s boss Philip (a wonderfully squirmy Peter MacNicol), and a blithe gold digger named Rita (Jennifer Esposito, Dracula 2000). Writer/director Daniel Taplitz gives his characters, if not three dimensions, then two and a half–comedy comes out of their personalities instead of lame gags. Add in some unpredictable plot twists, genuine chemistry between Foxx and Union, and the result is genuinely fun. –Bret Fetzer

I just watched The Jack Paar Collection… WOW what an incredible movie! Jack Paar and Jose Melis were great together! The great cast includes Jack Paar, Jose Melis, Hugh Downs, Dody Goodman, Pat Harrington Jr..
If you love watching Jack Paar or Jose Melis, you are definitely going to want to watch The Jack Paar Collection

Jack Parr kept a low public profile after turning over the reigns of The Tonight Show to Johnny Carson in 1962. Thus, his passing in January 2004, did not receive nearly the attention it deserved. The Jack Paar Collection restores the legacy of the talk-show pioneer who brought the art of conversation to the barren landscape of late-night television. But, I kid you not, it is an indispensable time capsule that preserves appearances and performances by politicians, personalities, and entertainers who shaped the 20th century. And Robert Goulet, too. Disc 1 of this three-disc set is an appreciation of Paar that combines vintage clips with reminiscences and insights from the likes of Regis Philbin, Hugh Downs, who served as Paar’s announcer, Dick Cavett, one of his writers, and the Smothers Brothers, who were among the legendary performers who made their earliest TV appearances on the Tonight Show stage (there are hilarious clips featuring Woody Allen, Bill Cosby, and, from 1964, Kermit the Frog, then just a tadpole in local television).
As Paar demonstrated when he quit The Tonight Show after one of his jokes was censored, anything could happen. In one hilarious clip, he fouls up a Goulet-Judy Garland duet by mixing up their cue cards. Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales observes that, unlike predecessor Steve Allen and successors Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, Jack Parr’s Tonight Show combined “the edge of journalism and sparkle of showbiz.” Then-Sen. John F. Kennedy was one of the first politicians who ventured into this more informal, unpredictable setting. There is amazing footage of guest Richard M. Nixon playing piano. Discs 2 and 3 present the master at work. Disc 2 contains complete monologues and guest interviews with Nixon, the boxer formerly known as Cassius Clay, Liberace, Billy Graham, and Robert Kennedy. Disc 3 offers three complete broadcasts, including a 1964 program with Cosby and Richard Burton (an added bonus is an embedded clip of Burton’s towering performance as Hamlet). Forgive the obvious pun, but to watch Jack in his prime is to see why today’s hosts are just not up to Paar. –Donald Liebenson
